Jozani Forest lies about 35 km southeast of Zanzibar township in Zanzibar’s South Region. It is the only remaining natural forest on Unguja Island (which along with Pemba make up the islands of Zanzibar). The forest which covers an area of 10 sq km consists of woodland, swamp forest and evergreen forest.  It provides an important refuge for the remaining Ungula fauna such as the rare red colobus monkey, small Zanzibar leopard and two antelope species: the Zanzibar duicker and sunni. The kirks red colobus monkeys (kima punju in swahili) are endemic to Zanzibar and were considered to be in danger of extinction about 10 years ago. Luckily conservation projects have been able to save this disaster. Nowadays there are about 6000 red colobus monkey who live in the Jozani Forest.
